"Straightaway, patient outcomes were greatly improved and with good patient selection with regards to suitability for this procedure, patient satisfaction rates improved."
The treatment options for eyebag removal in the past have largely centred on the surgical technique called blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty in simple terms means making a transconjunctival incision and the removal or repositioning of the medial, central and lateral fat pads of the eye. This procedure is often combined with surgical tightening of the skin in the infraorbital region. While the aesthetic outcomes are generally good, there is much downtime and discomfort which can last up to 2-4 weeks.
Due to many requests for a non-surgical option to treat eyebags, Dr Chew first started offering this technique called NonIncisional Laser Eyebag Rejuvenation (NILER) in 2008 with the aid of the Smartlipo laser system using a 300 micron 1064nm wavelength fibre optic laser. However due to the limitations of the laser, the outcomes were not always satisfactory.
In July 2009, Dr Chew started using the new Accusculpt laser with a 600 micron 1444nm wavelength fibre optic hand piece. Straightaway, patient outcomes were greatly improved and with good patient selection with regards to suitability for this procedure, patient satisfaction rates improved.
Procedure.
The NILER procedure is carried out with only local anaesthetic injected into the eyebag area which needs to be treated. A small needle entry point is made at the lateral edge of the eyebag through which the 600 micron bare laser fibre is inserted into the eyebag. The laser induces a simultaneous fat emulsification effect on the eyebag fat and at the same time a skin tightening effect. The whole procedure typically takes only 5-10 minutes to perform.
If you have mild to early moderately severe eyebags , this procedure offers a good alternative to the traditional blepharoplasty.
Results.
Bruising is uncommon although there is usually associated swelling or oedema in the lower eye area which can last from 1-5 days. Results can be expected to be optimal in 1-2 months time. In cases where there is an associated tear trough depression, this can be corrected in about 1-2 months post procedure with the aid of hyaluronic acid filler.
