Drooping Mouth Corners

The drooping mouth corners are also called “wrinkles of sadness” as they give the face an expression of sadness and anger even when you’re in a good mood. This causes associations with helplessness and a tendency to complain. It can also lead to poor self-esteem.

Droopy mouth corners are also known as inverted smile lines. Try to make a down turned frown and you will feel those jaw muscles tensing up and causing the muslces to pull the corners of the mouth downward. These set of muscles are called the Depressor Anguli Oris (DAO) and when overused, the repetitive action of frowning can lead to droppy mouth corners. If your cause of droopy mouth corner is caused by repetitive action of the DAO, you can request to have your doctor admister a neurotoxin injection like Botox or Xeomin to temporarily weaken the muscles.

Another cause of drooping is related to Aging. Loss of collagen and elastin in the skin causes it to sag, forcing the corners of the mouth to droop and the formation of so called’Marionette’ lines. Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane may be injected to restore the corners of your mouth. This helps to give support and replace what is lost in that area. In some cases, both fillers and Botox may be used to correct the droopy mouth corners.
