Bags found under the eyes can be caused by either mild swelling or puffiness and are common as we age. With aging, the tissues around our eyes, including some of the muscles supporting the lower eyelids, weaken. Normal orbital fat that helps support the eyes can then herniate downwards due to weakening of the orbital septum causing the lower lids to appear puffy.
Fluid may also accumulate in this space, adding to the puffiness. The loss of skin elasticity in this area as we age causes it to sag as well and enhances the appearance of the bags. The eye bags may be associated with fat loss in this area as well as dark eye circles. Other factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, genetics and lack of sleep may also play a part.
